This popular programmable, linear power supply has an excellent price/quality ratio. With an adjustment precision of 10mV/1mA, the voltage and current can be regulated accurately. The power supply has a separate switch to turn the power supply on and off. The device has 5 memory slots for storage and recalling of output settings.

As a starting point for operating the power supply via Linux or Windows via both USB and RS232 a customer has shared this script with us. To use this, Python and the Pyserial module are required. It is also possible to use this power supply with SIGROK software.

The protocol is serial (actual RS232 and serial-over-USB is supported by the devices), 9600/8N1, (almost fully) ASCII based. No line termination, CRC or checksum characters are used. The PC sends a request string which the power supply then responds to.

Power supply units are essential tool for every person involved in electronics. It happens for me to own a Korad, that is a linear (heavy) power supply which is at good price and have received good reviews.

The main task of a power supply is to supply a load with a configured constant voltage or constant current. However if the cables we are using are long or of bad quality, and the current of our circuit is considerable, then there will be a significant (depending on the application) voltage drop across the wires. That will result in lower voltage than specified across the load. A workaround, is to use short wires with very little resistance (good quality), but that is not always achievable.

For that reason higher end models are capable of remote sensing. That is they have an extra output port where we can plug a pair of wires for remote sensing. The other end of the sensing wires connect to the load. So if for whatever reason (including losses across wires) the voltage across the load is less than specified, the psu will sense it (at the load this time) and increase the voltage at its output until the load voltage be again the specified. For example if we see 5V volt output and voltage drop across wires is 0.2V then power supply will remotely sense 4.8 volts at load so will increase the output voltage until voltage at load be again 5V. I repeat myself I know!

This is a great power supply for serious hobbyists. I have used it for a few months now and it offers a great range of functions for an affordable price (around $250). My only problem with this unit is the noisy fan it comes with, and I ended up replacing it with a silent Noctua 80mm PC fan, and added a 100μF capacitor parallel to the fan power supply because the fan power itself was very noisy, too.

This was my first real power supply I ever bought. It is directed to beginners, and offers basic functionality. The second channel (3-6V) is a nice touch. My only complaint with this unit is the poor display resolution and update speed.

I built this myself, but I decided to include this power supply here because I actually do use it a lot. I like this supply very much because it has a built-in current and voltage display, and it has a rather low maximum current of 10mA, which makes this high voltage less dangerous (it is still dangerous, so be careful with that sort of thing). 2b1af7f3a8
