This is why Wish You Were Here is Malcolm Young's favorite Pink Floyd album, and his single favorite Pink Floyd album. He went into the studio and just played what he felt, and made a timeless album. A lot of bands try to make their first album \"album,\" and Wish You Were Here is the opposite. It doesn't give you enough time to get a grasp of what Pink Floyd's formula and musical styles are, or what you have to listen for. You learn new rules as you go along. But by the time you've listened to \"Have A Cigar\" 20 times you're \"adjusted\" to Pink Floyd's musical artillery.
Wish You Were Here is the perfect post-quake album. Listening to it, you feel like there is nothing in the world that could ever harm you. This is apparent in the somber, distressed, but also optimistic opener, \"Brain Damage.\" That's really what Wish You Were Here is about: recovery, after the Great Quake. It wasn't sad before, but is now. The album is a chronicle of an emotionally raw New York City just rebuilding and trying to heal. It's not the place you want to be just when the energy is ready to begin again. In \"Eclipse,\" these feelings are condensed, hard, and unwelcoming. Memory. But this is the most healing track on the album. Not everything that has happened to you is meant to heal you. Good times have consequences. \"The Happiest Days of Our Lives\" and \"Comfortably Numb\" are very dark, but very uplifting at the same time. \"Have A Cigar\" is a very important song on the album. It is a common theme throughout the album. Somebody is telling you to switch thinking and behavior. People who don't give a damn will laugh at you for choosing life, and assume you're kidding. It is a dangerous animal. But then Pink Floyd comes in and keeps you on track, and you know they have your best interests at heart. Listen to it again and notice the following: First, the darkness, then the light. Just under 30 minutes of dynamic musical beats in the deep, and just under 25 minutes of more uplifting, whirling, synthy, carefree bubblegum pop. The two concepts don't even intermingle; it's still and all entwined. 7211a4ac4a
