Because of their intrinsic 3D nature, FSE sequences are capable of achieving high spatial resolution while maintaining a very short echo train length. As a result, the multiple phase encoding steps in 2D FSE sequences, which must be reduced to reduce the total echo time in a multi-slice 2D FSE sequence, are no longer necessary for acquiring multiple slices. However, image distortions due to severe magnetic field inhomogeneity have been reported in 3D FSE sequences[@B1]. It is thus necessary to evaluate the potential clinical impact of these distortions, and the diagnostic value of these imaging sequences.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twelve patients with suspected brain lesions were evaluated in our department with a 3D FSE sequence with very high spatial resolution using a 7.0 T MRI system (Discovery MR750, GE Healthcare, Waukesha, WI, USA) in conjunction with a four-channel phased array head coil. All images were interpreted independently by two neuroradiologists. The 3D FSE sequence was performed with the following parameters: TR/TE 3200/16, matrix 512×512, FOV 24cm×24cm, acquisition plane 12 contiguous sagittal slices. The slice thickness was 1.5 mm, and the slice gap was 1.0 mm. The number of phase encoding steps was increased from 6 to 12 in the axial direction, with a slice thickness of 2 mm and a gap of 2 mm.

RESULTS
